Join me in my efforts to support Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation!

As I stated in my email, two years ago, my father-in-law, Jules who was an avid cyclist, was in a bicycle accident that left him paralyzed. He passed away three months after the accident. In the time between his accident and his passing, my wife, Jen, turned to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for both support and information.

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is committed to finding treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders, and improving the quality of life for people living with disabilities. Having seen the impact that a spinal cord injury can have on a person and their family and knowing the effort that the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is making, I have decided to support the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

After his accident, Jules was the inspiration that led me to start training for and entering triathlons. This year I plan on completing 4 triathlons. Here are the triathlons that I expect to enter (please note that I will provide updates here and on my Facebook page as I complete each event):

1) LI Gold Coast Triathlon - 6/21/09 - Last year I completed this sprint triathlon in 1:28.02. This year, thanks to the rain, the swim portion of this event was cancelled. Since we could not swim, we ran, biked and ran again. My guess is that we ran about 1.7 miles, biked 12 and ran another 3. My splits were approximately 16 minutes in run 1, 40 minutes on the bike and 25 minutes in run 2. I spent another 4 minutes in transitions. My total time was 1:24.56. I was about 4 minutes better in the bike and 2nd run vs. last year. Since swimming is my strongest event, had Long Island not turned into the Pacific Northwest, I probably would have been very happy with my performance.

2) NYC Triathlon - 7/26/09. An Olympic distance triathlon consisting of a 1.5K swim, 40K bike ride and a 10K run (for the metric challenged that is a .92 mile swim, a 24.8 mile bike ride and a 6.2 mile run). If you are wondering where the swim is I have two words: Hudson River. I expect to complete this in about 3:10.

3) Runners Edge TOBAY Triathlon -8/30/09 - This will be my 3rd year in this event. In year 2, I tool 6 minutes and 22 seconds off of my time. I do not expect to drop that amount again but, I do expect to beat last years' 1:29.09. This race is a sprint with a 1K swim,15K bike ride and a 5K run. This might be the shortest of the events that I will enter but don't be fooled. The bike ride has a really nasty hill and the first half of the run is uphill.

4) Either Mighty Hamptons Triathlon (another Olympic distance) or Might Montauk (a half Ironman). I will decide after completing the NYC Triathlon.

Please know that I thank you for supporting Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
