Join me in my efforts to support Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation!
In August 2007, Cory Greenbaum, the son of our dear friends Heidi and Scott, was in a debilitating car accident. While he was fortunate to survive, Cory sustained a spinal cord injury which left him with limited mobility. Since the accident Cory has made great strides towards recovery, as a result of the excellent care he has received in institutions throughout the Northeast, the support of his family, and his own unbelievable hard work and dedication. His energy and spirit have remained unchanged through the process, and this has made him a personal inspiration to me.
On September 13th, in Cory’s honor, I will be competing in an Ironman Triathlon in Madison, Wisconsin to raise money for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, as part of ‘Team Reeve’. An Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run. This organization is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy. Many of the therapies Cory has received in the past year have come from the research conducted and/or funded by the Reeve Foundation; and it is my hope that some day the money raised by Teem Reeve will lead to medical breakthroughs that eliminate the suffering of spinal cord injury patients throughout the world, including Cory.
While my training has been long and hard leading up to this event, it pales in comparison to the work Cory does everyday trying to get better.
I have donated $10,000 myself to kick off the fundraising. I will also donate an extra $1,000 for every ten minutes I complete the race in under thirteen hours. This will be the extra motivation to run, bike, and swim faster. My goal is to finish the race in eleven hours and thirty minutes, which would amount to another $9,000 for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
Unfortunately, on July 15th I fell off my bike and broke my collar bone. The doctor had informed me that my recovery process would inhibit my ability to train, but after a week, I started training without moving my shoulder. After 3 and a half weeks, I was able to start running and biking again. I'm currently back in full swing and still plan on breaking 11 hours and thirty minutes.
I ask you to consider sponsoring me in my race by making a tax-deductible contribution to the Reeve Foundation.
